Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness.

It's been just over a week now since our return from the heat of Corfu and a welcome back to the great British summer!  Autumn now seems to have just about started so it will be back to stews and soups and farewell to Greek salads and fresh melon!
The food in Corfu was good but by the end of 2 weeks of eating much the same stuff I was ready for a curry and some fish and chips!  Now I've never been a big fan of Moussaka and so I never ordered it in any of the many restaurants that we ate in.  We found some delightful Tavernas, some by the sea and others with views to die for but our favourite was called Dionysos - a family run restaurant within walking distance of our villa.  Apparently Dionysos was the Greek god of wine and ......orgies although for the life of me I can't think which would have come first?  The patron was called Tassos and he was married to an English girl called Flo - they did the front of house stuff whilst Tassos' mother and two sisters did the cooking and his father ran the bar downstairs, all very cosy.  The food was great, pasta, salads, fish, stiffado (beef cooked slowly in red wine with baby onions) was all on the menu and very reasonably priced.  The restaurant was in two parts - an upstairs and a covered area on the other side of the road. This amused me as the road was the main coast road between Corfu town and the north part of the island - it was like having a restaurant with sitting areas either side of the M4!  Every time an order had to be taken from the kitchen to the sitting area over the road, Tassos and his merry band took their lives in their hands - we watched them checking first one way and then the other for any signs of traffic, once they were convinced that they were not going to get mowed down by the number 7 bus to Kassiopi, they would set off accross with the tray of food held high above their heads. Occasionally they would misjudge their timing and narrowly avoid one of the endless stream of scooters that people ride out there with apparent total disregard for their own or anyone elses safety!  All good fun !

Tassos disposes of some more raki to an unsuspecting British tourist!

So two weeks of doing not very much except eating, drinking, sunbathing and reading has left me somewhat sluggish - not even a Greek dance or the opportunity to smash some plates so it's back to a strict exercise regime and a lower calorific intake - perhaps I'll start tommorrow?

Definitely NOT the Moussaka
