Where's the black sand? |
Onward to a government supported craft centre that sold everything to intricately weaved sarongs to stuffed orang -utans. Back in the taxi and we were whisked off to the cable car, an impressive construction that was very Alpine-like, without the snow! We only queued for about 5 minutes before scambling into the 6 seater pod with our fellow pod mates, a Japanese couple and a couple from Saudi Arabia.
The views were spectacular but the air conditioning had much to be desired! We jumped ship half way up for a quick respite before continuing up to the summit.
The usual stalls were there to greet us selling T shirts that advertised " I survived the Cable Car". I thought that this was a little premature as we hadn't actually survived the descent yet! I shouldn't have worried - the journey down was equally safe although a Malay woman did look as if she was about to vomit all over me - not sure if it was my aftershave, my boyish good looks that she was forced to look at
or the heat and motion of the swaying pod!
The Oriental Village that surrounds the cable car has lots of stalls and cafes so whilst we were waiting for our driver, I bought a genuine pair of Oakley sunglasses - 19 ringgits, (£4) - bargain! The English were once again out in the heat of the day so we had to do the Telaga Tujuh waterfall which was a short drive away but an 10 minute walk, up a very steep hill!
With the waterfall dutifully photographed, we returned to our taxi covered in perspiration! The air conditioning in the cab wasn't very efficient so rather than head for the flesh pots of Chenang beach, we opted for a return to the hotel and a swim!
Lunch, a siesta and a sail completed the afternoons exertions and dinner was taken on the deck in the Saffron restaurant.
Our last day has been spent lounging around the pool area reading and swimming - we bumped into Fendi our guide from the boat trip who wanted to know when we were coming back to see him - soon we told him - I think that he secretly wanted Sue to be his 2nd bride!
Our time in Langkawi has been wonderfully relaxing and it hardly seems that we've been away for three weeks. Our memories of Langkawi and Malaysia generally, will be of a warm and friendly people who are proud of their beautiful and culturally rich country. Tomorrow we head for our last day in Malaysia, to KL where we started. We're staying in the Milleneum Grand, a 5 star monolith in the Golden traingle . Time for some last minute shopping and another meal in Jalan Alor. Rumour has it that Arsenal FC are staying in our hotel before they play a friendly pre season match on Wednesdy night. Perhaps I'll get the chance to have a game of " keepy uppies" with Theo Walcott or exchange a few pleasantries with Arsen Wenger!
